According to Soccer Insider...

"That's not something that is permitted in the CBA [collective bargaining agreement], it's not something we are going to allow and something, should they decide to do,
we will have to manage it the way we would manage any other violation of the collective bargaining agreement. I believe we have got great players who have strong levels of integrity and competitive spirit, and I believe they will play this game the way they play every other game. ... We will pay the prize money as it was originially dictated as determined by MLS ownership. If there is something we determine is a violation of the CBA, we will address it."

Stern words from the commissioner.

  1. I hope this is all posturing in front of CBA negotiations, because otherwise, MLS could be in for the one thing that it CANNOT afford. An NHL style lockout

  5. Man, talk about money grubbing... I honestly see a strike looming or a lot of players leaving during the CBA to go overseas anywhere they can (even USL) to get away from MLS. Sure Sepp wasn't talking about slavery in MLS?

  7. This is just another reason why Don has to go. He is so out of touch that he will make an issue out of the players violating the very contract that he and MLS have violated in very same way.

This constant double standard, the rules changing depending on what Don and a few cronies want, is what is holding MLS back and make players, coaches and fans all want major changes in the league.

  13. Good for Garber. He has to answer to the sponsors and all the contracts that were set up for this event (tournament). The Players Union has absolutely no authority to make such a declaration and carry through with it. Just think of the hellraising that would be going on if it was an all Mexi final and they tried to do the same thing. MLS would equally cry foul on that as well as all the fans, for them even attempting to sabatoge the event (final).

The players situation sucks no doubt but they also made their bed and agreed to the terms. Man up.

They CBA needs to be overhauled completely but this is not the way you try to make a statement.

  15. It seems SuperLiga has as much meaning to the players as the US Open Cup means to the owners. I'm sure the second-team players would love an opportunity to play a final on TV and earn more money. Unfortunately, I'm sure the owners want the million dollars so the first teams have to duke it out for them. I can't see the players treating this like anything other than a mid-season friendly.

  21. sure thats gay that he has to say that, but dont automatically ask for don garbers resignation. he's a man whos done a lot for this league, and as for a strike over a stupid little tournament as the superliga, that would just be retarded. the way i see it. just dont qualify for the damn tournament. xD

  23. The players and owners both know that they can't afford a strike/lockout, so they'll do whatever it takes to avoid it!

As for Garber, he's doing a great job! He's changed the league to be a much more true-sooccer-fan-friendly league. There's a long way to go, but they're on the track! I just wish that Garber would push to move some of the useless franchises (Columbus, KC, and Chivas), instead of wasting resources on SSS's in non-soccer markets. They need to build the game where there are soccer fans that are not neccessarily MLS fans (NYC...Miami...St. Louis...Phoenix or San Diego), and cities that have huge fan support for their USL clubs (Montreal...Vancouver...Portland).

Here's my wish for MLS 2012:
    WEST:
    Vancouver Whitecaps
    Seattle Sounders FC
    Portland Timbers
    San Jose Earthquakes
    LA Galaxy
CD San Diego or Phoenix (Chivas)
    Real Salt Lake
    Colorado Rapids
    FC Dallas
    Houston Dynamo

    EAST:
    St. Louis United
    Chicago Fire
    Toronto FC
    Montreal Impact
    New England Revolution
    New York City
    Red Bull New Jersey
    Philadelphia
    DC United
    Miami

Move KC and Columbus to USL1, where they belong!
