RéAl Salt Lake
Real Pissed Off.
What a wild night in Salt Lake. In a game that saw no goals, a lot certainly went on.
If you watched Houston at Real Salt Lake on ESPN2 tonight you saw a spirited match between two sides vying for 1st place in the MLS Western Conference. You also no doubt saw a highly physical game which at times seemed to get out of control resulting in 6 yellow cards,1 red card, handbags at 30 paces and a very pissed off Jason Kries.
If you were part of the 18,000 or so that were at Rice Eccles stadium, you might have seen a lot more than was shown on ESPN. (And if so, feel free to tell us).
Our question is simple: What the hell?
Just what went on depends on perspective. We as neutrals however question some of the officiating and wonder why Houston did not have a player sent off as well.
After the match a clearly livid Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis nearly exploded in the post-match press conference with comments that are sure to have league bosses questioning whether to fine him again. In the very least we seriously doubt we will hear such frank comments about officiating in MLS in the weekly MLS Coaches Quotes.

According to several people who called into Salt Lake City's KALL 700 fans threw projectiles on the pitch and allegations that Dwayne DeRosario retaliated by kicking a mini soccer ball into the stands

Another MLS game and another reason to question just where MLS officials get their training.
Allowing chippy play to continue only causes emotions to fester and eventually, scrapping/fighting.... that is, unless the ref does their job and cuts that shit out before it starts.
MLS ref's need a winter camp in England for some much needed TRAINING..... seriously.
Its not about handing out 1000000 yellow and red cards, its about handing out cards at the correct times to keep the intensity and level of play a maximum, while at the same time keeping the cheap crap to a minimum.
I was at the game.
Through out the entire match the referee was horrible for both teams. He came in with the idea to let them play the game (which is a great idea) but did not do a good job of punishing players accordingly. When both sides saw that they could get away with tackles from behind and not get called or only recieve a yellow card if they were the last man (Barrett) they went for it. Houston showed no class. RSL kicked the ball out of bounds once so an injured Houston player could be attended to. We all thought that Houston would be good sports and give RSL back the ball but they didn't.
I was very disapointed with the referee. Yes, Wingert deserved the red he got but what about Houston. Why didn't Ashe or De Rosaurio get a red for being apart of it. DR started the whole thing and he didn't even get a yellow. Ashe did recieve a yellow card.
There will come a day that RSL can actually put a shot on goal and score. They're just not getting it done. The defense is basically rock solid.
Houston is a classless team. I wish players could just play the game.
yeah...exactly what the first post says! How much worse can the MLS refs get? as a Dynamo fan and supporter, the frustration is just building for these guys with all the ties and I'm sure DeRo got tired of getting hacked all game and just pushed back. no telling what Ashe heard.
I've only really started to watch all the MLS games once the Dynamo came to town. the level of officiating just keeps making the MLS look like a Division 2 league.
oh great, more "bad fan behavior" on mls rumors. wonder what story will be blown of of proportion this time.
Such a good point on that lack of fair play by Houston.
They should get punished for that
Did everyone in the stands identify the "rowdy" fans and turn them in????
De Ro didn't get anything because he's a God.
I too was at this game, and the behavior of the fans was horrible. I am a RSL fan, and even I was embarrassed.
Regardless of what the ref's, or players do there is no excuse for throwing anything onto the field of play. The game does not mean enough to get someone hurt.
When will fans realize that the price of a ticket does not buy you immunity from being an asshole. I for one did identify two idiots in my section that threw objects on the field, but unfortunately that I don't think it is enough to make a difference.
The ref's in this league do bring a lot of it on themselves, but they do not deserve some of the idiotic treatment they get as well.
I was at the Crew vs Fire game this weekend. Jon Busch, Fire goalie, kicked the soccer ball, on purpose, into the north end of the stadium late in the game. He was also taunting the fans as well.
I was at the game and I was up high enough to see Jason getting ticked off. It was pretty dang funny!!!
