VIDEO: West Ham/Crew Brawl, Columbus Issues a Statement

Posted by MLSR Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Video of the brawl everyone has been talking about:

video

And an official statement from the Crew:

The Columbus Crew issued the following statement regarding an altercation that took place at Crew Stadium during halftime of Sunday's exhibition between West Ham United and the Crew which has been exaggerated in at least one news report:

“While a skirmish among a very small group of West Ham and Crew supporters did occur on Sunday, media reports referring to it as a “brawl” or "fights" are gross mischaracterizations. The incident was initiated by the actions of three West Ham supporters who entered the Crew supporters section at halftime. Crew Stadium security intervened and immediately began to escort those West Ham supporters to the concourse, at which time several Crew supporters
became involved. On the concourse, Columbus Police quickly assumed control of the situation and made one arrest. Three other attendees were ejected by stadium security at that time. Supporters of both clubs were gathered on the concourse during the altercation, but nearly all of them were bystanders or onlookers and not active participants. Order was restored within minutes, prior to the beginning of the second half of play. Although it was a minor incident, the reputation of our organization and our fans is extremely important to us and as soccer's popularity continues to grow, we will continue to make every effort to ensure that our fans have a safe and enjoyable experience when they visit Crew Stadium.”

  2. Honestly, that is no different than things that happen at NFL stadiums across the country week in and week out. I've seen worse at Browns Stadium.

  12. I am far from a Crew fan but I must state here for the record that Crew supporters are being treated disrectfully by McCullers and their front office on this. The fans are correct in stating that the security did nothing to keep the two groups apart and allowing WHUFC fans free access to the Nordecke and focusing on stupid stuff like streamers led to this taking place. Nowhere in the statement issued does the Crew front office state that they are reveiwing internal procedures and taking some responsibility for what went down, as they should be doing!

Hopefully MLS realizes that until consistent rules surrounding site security are instituted in all MLS venues this kind of crap, and also what happened in New York last week, will continue to escalate until somebody gets really hurt and the entire league collectively receives a black eye.

  14. My God, that was boring, but I suppose that that's "hooliganism" for MLS's most boring fans.

  16. What the hell is with these generalizations, isn't that a big part of what racism is in the first place?

We are not racists one idiot is a racist who was not even in the section, come to a game and stand in the Nordecke and witness the fact that no one there appreciates stuff like that.

  18. This is why we need a MLS-sanctioned policy for all stadiums.
People should be able to cheer and sing in peace without the thret of mob violence. These guys are bringing the third world to the MLS.

  22. ^^^@Chivas Fan

Chivas USA fans stabbed a Houston fan earlier this year in Houston.

It's not like you are the angels you think you are.

Shit happens when 2 or 3 people of a certain group drink too much. It's up to the supporters group to police themselves and its up to security to keep opposing sides separated both inside AND outside the stadium.

  24. That video sucks first of all...and what a load of bollocks from Crew...

If anyone looks at any pictures of the incident...there are CLEARLY at least 7 West Ham guys in most pictures....sure it's not 30, but it is certainly more than the 3 that Crew claim, and that is an out and out lie by them....I mean seriously..the picture on this site shows 4 WHU strips in the picture and 2 other fans right there.....

Nice PR job by the Crew, but what a load of crap.

  26. "This is our house" chant?

Hey Columbus, stop trying to be Toronto.

When is the league going to dump this team already?

  27. Anonymous Says:
  28. Wait, Toronto invented "This is our house?!" Add that one to the ever growing list!

  30. Didn't know NFL stadiums, high school football and basketball have fans wearing scarfs and doing chants. That's awesome!

Kidding aside, at the end of the video, where the Crew fans were "cheering" and chanting "USA" will not go over well with the hooligans over in East London.

  32. Crew fans are a credit to MLS, I love it. Defend your turf.

Nobody is going to f*ck with Columbus fans next time around, I guarantee that.

I don't understand why anyone would want to take this team away, I've only been paying attention to MLS for a year now but Columbus has the best looking jerseys, great fans, and a good stadium. It looks much better to watch them than New York or DC, where the stadium looks empty. Columbus actually looks, like you yanks say, MAJOR LEAGUE.

  34. I hate to say it but the this is our house chant has been around for years. It is not another thing that Toronto can claim as theirs.

  36. "actually it's someone who is well known to go to several KKKREW games... quit playing dumb!!"

OK who then, cause like I said if you look at all the other supporters videos, pictures, or blogs of the Nordecke you won't find any racism at all.

Go have fun supporting your Mickey Mouse team.

It is? How come ive never seen him? This place acts like he is the head of the supporters sections leading neo nazi chants over a loud speaker or something. One drunk asshole does not condemn an entire fanbase and if u cant see that then u have a real problem

  40. It comes down to this... there are certain over zealous fans that support many of the MLS teams that are trying to be like European fans. The problem with this is that in the USA, the MLS is a minor league compared to European soccer leagues. So the next step is: how does the MLS become a major soccer league? The answer comes down to improving revenue and interest in the league. To do this you cannot have fights breaking out in the stands nor any racial slurs said. While this may work for teams in Europe, the sports landscape in the USA is much different. Soccer in the USA has many different sports that it has to compete with to generate revenue and interest. When these things happen it alienates families who bring kids to the game as well as corporate sponsors who want their brand name to be associated with positive things and events. In the sort term fights like these may bring in a handful of fans who enjoy this sort of thing, but in the long term it is only hurting the team and the league.

  42. MLS is getting over anxious and reports like this will help to stop that

  44. what started the whole issue according to a couple people who were actually at the event, was a bit of name calling and shit talking outside of the stands where a couple WHU fans were jeered by Crew supporters who greatly out numbered them, the WHU fans went and got a little reinforcement and went back to give back some grief, the end result is the video, and other pushing, shoving and name calling not seen on the video.

It wasn't a big deal, but reality is I expect this type of crap at high school football matches in America and anywhere where 13-15 yr olds might gather. Adults, should know better.

  45. LarryB Says:
  46. The only thing is from what I could tell the crew fans were being jeered from the word go. I walked in to the stadium being jeered by WHU fans gathered outside of the stadium right at the entrances screaming so loud at me my ears were actually ringing. I'm not talking 2-3 there were probably 20. Followed up with me standing in line with my wife to get food, only to be jeered for the entire 15 minute wait by the WHU fans directly behind me. Infact they were being so loud in jeering me that when I got to order my food the person taking my order could barely hear me. What ever. So be it, I ignored them and pleasantly told them to piss off when I left the line. Then to watch this go down in the nordecke. The thing that really started it was the fact they were jeering children and families, to the point where they actually threw beer on the ppl. Adult or child, when something like that happens there will be a response of some kind and it will almost always escalate. Simple answer, security doesn't let them in to the section and keeps the supporters seperated in the concourse, this doesn't happen. End of story.
