TORONTO -- Major League Soccer Board of Governors approved expanding by two teams by 2011, MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced following Thursday's Board of Governors meeting in Toronto.
At the meeting, Commissioner Garber provided updates on prospective expansion markets throughout the U.S. and Canada. Markets reviewed during today's meeting included (in alphabetical order) Atlanta, Las Vegas, Montreal, a second team in the New York area, Ottawa, Portland, St. Louis and Vancouver.
In conjunction with prospective Canadian expansion, MLS officials will work with Toronto FC owners Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, as well as potential expansion candidates, to develop national commercial revenue streams to support expansion into Canada.
MLS officials will issue specific details on the expansion application process within the next seven days.

so he brought up Miami in the press conference but not the board meeting according to this report.
Garber is doing things right. Expanding slowly.
Promotion and Relegation is next evolutionary step. Can't wait!
C'mon we all know the deal with Miami.
If Becks retires in 2010, they get a team in 2011. If he retires in 2015 Miami is frozen out until 2016.
Get it?
Miami's MLS team is not up for grabs and for investors. The others are. Miami's MLS team is property of a certain #23 currently playing for LA.
this is GREAT NEWS! VIVA MLS! LONG LIVE DON GARBER!
Promotion and Relegation in MLS isn't the next evolutionary step, it's an evolutionary dead end. Quit your wishful thinking.
New York, New York!
Don Garber has done so much for this league its amazing.
from the looks of it if he's looking for the right investors its going to be Vancouver for sure.
and most likely Portland by 2011. as for the next two by 2013 im guessing. it'll be St.Louis and New York. I dont really see Miami getting a team yet. IMO
im a miami fan and even i admit we wont get ours in 2011. these will go to st. louis and montreal. miami after 2012, probably along with new york 2. sorry, portland is just too small. mls has enough small markets, now its time to give the big cities theirs.
Vancouver! Seattle wants our great rival to the north. Portland...too small.
Is a second 2010 expansion site completely dead?
I have always thought that boxing and soccer need the hispanic fan base to succeed in the US. Why does MLS seem to be ignoring the large hispanic populations in cities such as Pheonix, San Diego, San Antonio?
NYC and Montreal in 2011 !!!
I have more of a question than a comment so pardon my ignorance.
Why NY2? Why would New York deserve a second team when the first one isn't supported (with the exception of a few select games.)
I would much rather see new cities brought into the league, than old ones doubling up...
But I still don't understand with the desire to put in NY2, with such crappy attendances to begin with... Why does everyone want to cannibalize it even more?
Lol you guys obviously don't know how big Portland and the surrounding area is...or how well the USL team draws there. Portland would easily draw 10k and probably even more, and has Intel, Nike, Adidas, HP and tons of other companies that would make great sponsors and supporters of the team. St. Louis is in, but only if they get an owner that can afford to lose money, which they don't yet. Don't be surprised if Portland takes St. Louis' spot...they have alot already working for them and it sounds like they have a city govt that is behind them now too.
Wow, I thought Vancouver was dead in the water with the Port Authority problems. Now they seem to be at the head of the pack for expansion. Good luck to Nash & company!
Anyway, most of the prospective teams seem like viable options, so who knows who will be coming-in next.
BTW, the Red Bulls are more like a New Jersey team. A true New York team would probably draw much bigger crowds.
I just love you guys who have no idea what so ever about Portland calling it to small, never mind that Portlands USL team as a bigger rabid fan base than most MLS teams, a stadium to play in NOW (though it could and will be better with some modifications,) AND an owner with deep pockets.
Not to mention its one of the fastes growing markets in the top 25 in the US.
