REPORT: Crew Trouble Brews Again in Columbus

Posted by MLSR Sunday, July 20, 2008

Three words Columbus:

Sort. It. Out.

We got several reports about incidents at the Crew friendly with West Ham but decided to sit on them until tomorrow morning. We are so often accused of being anti-Columbus and biased against Crew fans, so why rush to spread more bad news?
Well the following story is going out over the AP Wire so if you Columbus fans think we're biased for running this then we suggest you take up your protest with the Associated Press and save your breath here. We all know you see yourselves as the "Milwall" of MLS but getting into a ruck with West Ham supporters is going too far.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A halftime brawl between more than 100 fans marred an exhibition match Sunday between West Ham United of the English Premier League club and the MLS' Columbus Crew.

The fights, which overshadowed West Ham United's 3-1 win, began when a handful of West Ham supporters, some wearing the team's claret and blue colors, entered the northeast corner of the stadium where the Crew's most boisterous supporters typically gather.

Crew supporters began directing chants toward the rival fans, and fights quickly broke out between more than 100 Crew fans and at least 30 West Ham fans. Columbus police officers and Crew Stadium security staff eventually separated the groups.

Highway Patrol officers arrested one fan outside the stadium for disorderly conduct, Patrol spokeswoman Anne Ralston said. A dispatcher didn't know whether Columbus police had made any arrests inside the stadium.

And this was an excerpt of the story in USA Today:

This is the second incident Crew fans have been involved in this season. As New England celebrated its winning goal at Columbus on May 24, a fan shouted a racial slur at Revolution forward Kheli Dube, who scored in the 89th minute. Dube is black. The incident prompted a league investigation, with MLS commissioner Don Garber saying that the fan will be banned from league games for life if officials were able to identify him from a video that captured it.

We also received the following reports by email:

"Hey I don't know if you guys know about this, you probably do but all hell broke out in Columbus. I travelled down from Cleveland to see the Crew take on West Ham and all sorts of crap went on between some traveling West Ham supporters and the Crew's Nordecke. The police were called, bottles were thrown, it got ugly."

"Hello, I wasn't sure if you guys were being unfair to Crew supporters or not until today. They are at it again. This time they messed with some hard core West Ham people and fi
ghting broke out. Keep an eye out for more news on this soon, I'll try to forward anything I find your way."

"Crew Hooligans acting up again, check this link."

A Red Bull fan sent in the following reworking of a Bon Jovi classic, we find it appropriate to repost here:

You're fans are a scourge
And you're to blame
You give the league
A bad name.

Seriously, Crew, we're sick of reporting on your problems, so fix them. Perhaps rather than blaming Toronto for hosting the All Star Game which brought West Ham over you can learn how to police yourselves?

Good for you guys. I'm sure there was plenty of seating at the stadium so these guys came in to your section looking for trouble. I hope you guys kicked the shit out of them.

    There you go.

  4. I'm sure you won't post this, but I'm not sure exactly how a bunch of wannabe West Ham hoodlums walking into the middle of the Crew Supporters Section and starting trouble is the fault of Crew fans, but I'm glad you've decided it is.

  6. So. Basically you are saying visiting fans coming in to the supporters section of the home team, heckling them and then throwing beer on them won't start a fight in any stadium? Is that what I'm hearing? Give me a break. A scene like this could be seen anywhere when a bunch of dumb ass tough guys go in to the home teams supporters section looking to start shit. In fact I'm sure we could go find atleast a couple articles where the same has already happened this year. Infact there were a couple just recently involving the Superliga. Lets not make this out to be more than it is fellas. The same things happen every year in stadiums all across the world.

  14. Lol, sort it out.

So shirtless guys flicking people off and throwing beer on families in our section should just go off with a "oh they are just clowning around, they are West Ham. That's what they do." Doesn't it take two to tango? Doesn't each of those articles blame West Ham for coming over and starting the altercation? So what do we have to sort out exactly, MLS RUMORS. F' you.

If they do that in TFC, Chicago, or DC it's the same result. And, I could care less what MLS Rumors or anyone else thinks about us protecting our own.

Sort what out? Maybe our security, who if they were not too concerned with throwing out people with umbrellas they could focus on not letting a whole bunch of West Ham fans stroll into our section.

  16. so the west ham supporters who came into the crew supporter section to start things have no fault in this? seriously the people who run this website are a bunch of hacks with a computer. I hope to god no one pays you for your pathetic attempt and journalism. You are all a bunch of amateur idiots.

  18. No big deal.

It was just a bunch of words. Nothing you wouldn't see on a day in the NFL.

It wasn't 30 people trying to enter the section. More like a dozen at most.

They were escorted away and that was that.

The police on fan violence in the parking lot after the game was more of the real thing.

These shitbags need to get banned, these german racists warhammer scum, good for west ham

  24. How about you put some plan on the West Ham supporters that came into the supporters section of Columbus fans? (The only reason people do that is because they're looking for a fight.) Or how about putting some blame on the security for not doing their job and letting the West Ham fans into the section in the first place? (If they were doing their job, the WHU fans wouldn't have even made it into the section.)

Even the articles you quote say that the West Ham supporters were the ones that started it by coming into the section.

Instead we get the Crew bashing that many have come to expect from this blog.

  28. A recap from HardhatMike from the Crew forum on BS..........

This was all these select guys' fault in the parking lot. They were drunk and went out the same gate as the WHU fans (mistake #1) and decided to run their mouths despite being outnumbered (mistake #2). They got exactly what they went looking for and it seems they got jumped by some WHU guys. After than we broken up, they were pissed off and thier buddies, yelling "where was hudson street?" Meanwhile, the more reasonable members of HSH were walking back to Rubys like they always do when they heard these idiots yelling their name. They went over to see what the situation was and one of the loud idiots decided to start a fight with Blake (hsh_b). The cops break up the fight and Blake starts to run away. The cops then fire a taser at Blake (hence my avatar and blurb), hitting his cinch sack on his back. Blake then runs away from the cops (who call in the chopper and everything) and is now in hiding at an "undisclosed location." Meanwhile, the idiot in the green shirt who instigated everything continues to jaw at the WHU fans in the parking lot and despite most of the Union guys pointing him out to the cops, nothing happens to him. He then tries to start stuff with Clem and Myself before walking away, still yapping like a little dog.

  30. Some Crew fans went out at half time and started mouthing off to the WH supporters. The Crew guys got beat up. Another Crew supporter yelled out that the WH supporters were pussies because they way out-numbered the guys who got beat up. This caused the small group of WH supporters to go to the Crew supporters section where the WH guys knew they'd be out-numbered and said "Still think we're pussies?" and a guy threw his beer and the others charged in.

  32. I like how your blog post begins by saying that you'll wait before placing blame and then you just go on to place blame.

I am unbiased here (Quakes fan) but really this is not the Crew supporters' fault. The West Ham supporters went into the supporters section looking for trouble, you can clearly see that from the photos.

So there is no possible way to blame the supporters section for this, but you do anyways. I wouldn't expect anything more from this blog. I'm done visiting your site.

  33. denz Says:
  34. Wow, so first it is TFC's fault that a handful of crew fans decide to throw more than streamers at players, then it must be New Englands fault for bringing non white players to Columbus, and now you once again have crew fans claiming it is someone elses fault. How about this ignore them and let security do their job, grow up and act like adults. But no stoop to the level of a couple trouble causers and cause the entire MLS to get another black eye because you have a very small group trying to prove their manhood at a soccer match. Is this really the 80's and south london?

Sorry I am ashamed to say that I ever had season tickets to the crew.

  36. This just shows how ignorant this blog is about football culture. In ANY other country in the world, if a group of drunk supporters invade the home supporters section looking for trouble and a fight ensues, nobody would blame the home fans. Seriously.

  37. Tommy Says:
  38. It's about time people start actually caring about football here. I know fights are bad and stuff and when people get hurt it makes it seem even worse but i'd almost rather that happen than nothing.

Soccer is different than american sports with traveling supporter's sections. Maybe MLS will learn to put them on opposite sides of the stadium so this doesn't happen.

  40. 1) Why were there families in Nordekkk section?
    2) If the Columbus Few would sell out even their supporters' section, then WHU fans wouldn't be there.
    3) Why is WHU even here? Seriously, we go from Chelsea to West Ham?

  41. Rumor Mill Says:
  42. Sorry to lose you San Jose fan but the accounts we've read point to both sides being responsible for this. There were several Columbus fans who before the WHU supporters came to their section, decided to provoke them. That ain't cool especially when your group is trying to show how good and well behaved they are.

  52. Ok, Rumor Mill, Quakes fan here again.

My question is this: If Crew fans started the fight, then why did it take place in the Crew Supporters section with a whole bunch of tatted up, drunk West Ham fans??

That's what the pictures show me. There are many posted on Big Soccer. The only fighting that took place happened because WH fans went into the Crew supporters section.

All the other stuff is anecdotal conjecture. Maybe a few crew fans said some things to WH fans. Happens all the time. What I know for a fact is that the fight didn't happen because a large group of Crew fans decided to invade a section of WH fans looking for trouble.

Get some perspective. I'll check back tomorrow, if I don't see a more balanced posting to correct the random garbage you put up tonight, I'm taking this blog off my bookmarks and I'm done with it for life.

Since when is it all-right for opposing "hardcore" fans to parade in the middle of supporters section and heckle them ok -- especially when beer is involved. Hah, these morons from Ham don't know what type of people they are dealing with in the States. Not a fan of violence in any respect, but poo happens sometimes. Can you imagine Skins fans coming down to a Cowboy tailgate and heckling? What you think is gonna be the result you sensationalist morons.

  56. Quakes fan you asked:

"My question is this: If Crew fans started the fight, then why did it take place in the Crew Supporters section with a whole bunch of tatted up, drunk West Ham fans??"

The answer is simple, there is at least one published report which states that the hostilities began with Crew supporters provoking West Ham supporters PRIOR to them coming into the Crew section. Other people and anecdotal evidence seems to back that up.

There is also a pattern of behavior that one has to question. Have West Ham supporters in the US typically wandered into opposing team's hardcore fan sections before?

Has Columbus had fan behavior issues before?

But what was their response? They walked into the wrong end on purpose to start things up.

Sure the intial instigation is not called for, but RIOTS can start with bullshit like what those West Ham fans pulled here.

Its funny how MLSR likes to promote equality in their so-called publishing, but its clear the agenda and their hatred forces them to separate Columbus from the rest. So three words for you, MLSR: Sort. It. Out.

The ICF are noted hooligans from many years past and not being at the ground I won't pass blame or judgement on the Columbus fans for protecting themselves. Sounds like your stadium security let you folks down. But when a group calls themselves the "Hudson Street Hooligans" you are waving a red flag in front of a charging bull. Maybe you poseurs in the HSH might consider that a name change might be a good idea for self preservation and also to ensure that you don't play into the stereotypes that are out there about soccer fans.

  85. This is not the Crew fan's fault. Sure words may or may have not been exchanged in the concourse, but any time a group of fans from another team parades into a section of opposing fans, this is the reaction.

Whether it is Cowboys fans at an Eagles games, Yankees fans at a Sox game, or Blackhawks fans at a Red Wings game, opposing fans visiting at an away game in traditional sporting towns are seldom welcomed with open arms.

Forunately, most MLS fans are smart enough not to try this stunt knowing the kind of publicity it would garner.

  94. Rumor Mill, while we know that you have an obvious bias against Columbus, and this incident doesn't help your opinion, I can say that at least from everything I had seen it seemed to start off from provocation from West Ham supporters. There were some verbal jabs back and forth before the game, but most of those were in good fun. What kicked it all of whas the group of WH supporters that moved into the Crew supporter section and were yelling and pointing fingers. Not only that a group of kids got hit with pop or beer and a couple of the parents approached the group. Being a parent myself I would have done the same. That being said though, Columbus does need more security. Thanks.

Your attempted response was laughable. One published report along with "other people" are your sources? Crew fans provoked West Ham supporters? Really? Go to any game on earth and you will see fans getting on each others' backs. It is called being a fan. The line is crossed when you go into the opposition's section looking for a fight.

People support the crew fans in this situation almost universally, yet you are finding the need to bash them. It seems to me you have other issues with crew fans, obviously displaying your biases.

  100. No one from the Nordecke made it over to West Ham's section, Rumor Mill. I can attest to that. They didn't have a chance to.

Right when the half time whistle blew I went to the fastest beer line a little down the concourse closer to where they were. I wasn't expecting anything because it was just a friendly and I was alone.

I see 20-30 of them start walking down the concourse to the Nordecke. One looked at me and flicked me off. Better then when I was entering the stadium when one of them walked right into me when I was passing and sort of did a headbutt. So, I gave up on the beer and followed to hopefully warn some people.

There was absolutely no chance for another melee to have broken out before this one. Wasn't enough time in the half time and I saw no commotion down at the far end of the concourse towards the other side of the stadium. No cops, no yelling, just them walking over.

Uh, not all English teams bring crowd trouble, douchebag. West Ham, on the other hand, is notorious for it. If you want to look for precedents, I suggest you look no further than WHU and the ICF. The fact that it was Columbus is incidental.

  110. Only in Columbus?

We have had European and English teams to our Stadia in the past....Fulham, Everton, Aston Villa. And I can tell you this as a member of a supporters section, I drank at a bar pre-match and post-match with all of these teams supporters. All great people.

The West Ham guys wanted nothing of that yesterday, in fact they took over the pub we go to and pissed off everyone before EVEN HEADING to the stadium. To them if you did not have a Hammers shirt on, your were scum and needed to be treated that way.

Also, it has been failed to mention about the huge ICF Flag that was hung in the stadium that read "ICF - 30 YEARS UNDEFEATED". But you know, these West Ham supporters were only there for the match and not to make trouble.....

    2. regardless of who started it, the fact is that both teams reputations preceed them. west ham is second only to millwall, as we all know they even made a movie about their hooligans. and we all know about columbus.

it does appear to me that these west hammers were looking for a fight. i am all for self defense, but the crew fan groups should have just ignored them or called security. that would have been the grown up thing to do, especially considering they have been in hot water about this crap before. crew fans missed a big opportunity here to prove all of their haters wrong.

whats up with the wet spam fans anyway? were they mostly english who just flew over or were they americans (or brits who have lived here for awhile)? sounds like an awful waste of money to fly all the way to america just to fight some mls fans.

"we want america to see what we are about"... well, west ham, we see what you are about, and we want nothing to do with it. blow your bubbles somewhere else.

  124. so its west ham's fault even though this is the 5th or 6th incident (so many, hard to keep track0 at Crew stadium this season, all with different teams? anyone see a pattern.

  126. some of you people need to give your heads a shake. this is MLS rumors, not EPL rumors. thats why there is a columbus focus on article.

  128. just move the crew to another city already and end the madness.

  130. From my vantage point in the Crew supporter section, VERY DRUNK, and mouthy WHU supporters came into our section and started throwing beer and cursing at Crew fans (who were watching the game.)

When someone throws a FULL cup of beer into YOUR face, are you telling me that you would just sit there and not react?

Then, when CPD and security try to come up to remove the jerks, it escalates and more WHU supporters come running over.

It's at that point, the Crew supporter section cleared.

The trouble started after WHU went looking for it.

Aston Villa came last year, and stayed in their section and we all enjoyed the games without a single incident.

Sure, we taunted each other, but that's what fans do. They didn't act like jerks.

Sheesh. Grow up people. There are two kinds of "football" in Columbus, and we're proud of both teams....

  132. columbus nordick "supporters" need to figure it out.

    1) dont have logo's that other supporters might gather are racist trash
    2) dont write "Hooligans" and use it as a moniker of pride.
    3) if you do, be prepared for every other supporter group to take a run at you
    4) when they do take a run at you, dont blame them.

you wanna be a hooligan? well thats what happens. your lucky you did that to a club that doesnt draw in the states like WestHam, b/c you talk smack you'll be run, you get all pissy after they take your bar? THATS WHAT HOOLIGANS DO! YOU HAVE HOOLIGAN IN YOUR NAME! Maybe other american supporters will look at it all as fun and games, but you do that to a REAL FIRM, and they will beat your ass.

Someday MLS will learn to put VIDEO CAMERAS in their stadiums covering all sections, then when the jackass yell racial slurs, he gets banned for seasons. If you throw stuff at players your banned for seasons. If your involved in Hooliganism, your banned for seasons. Thats how the hooligan game is played. its not a situation where its all fun and games and nothing happens.

I personally look forward to seeing you guys, you bring that racist trash fist with ya, you put up that HSH hooligan sign up. because after a while, it catches up with ya. Im just glad someone put you in your place. you thought this was some cute game where you could claim to be the millwall of MLS, well ppl are gonna come at you. YOU DID THIS TO YOURSELVES!

I hope every limey team that comes here to the states makes a run at ya. Youve had it coming and you did it to yourselves. no lay in that bed.

  134. WOW is was cool to see that old, old hooligans sign (the one with black and yellow alternating colors for each letter) That sign used to fly infront of the hooligans 107 during 2000 and 2001. It got lost 6 years ago, wonder where that picture was found.

  136. For everyone who says "Well there name is Hudons Street Hooligans so they brought it on themselves." You are forgetting that these WH fans were not british they were mostly Americans. Having said that they would know they difference between real english style hooligans and the type that is americanized. How many of you would see a person with a shirt that said Hooligan and think oh they are part of a firm? seriously!!

  138. Well, first Columbus screams racial slurs at Revs players and now they are brawling with WHU supporters. Sure both sides are to blame, but does anyone else see the a pattern developing?

I don't think calling the supporters club 'hooligans' is very good marketing either if you are trying to claim your innocence.

  140. What is Hulliganism? Are those supporters of Hull City?

Crew fans should apologize...for being so massive. The rest of MLS is filled with small clubs.

  141. learn to spell before you post,
it takes away your credibility not that I'd give you any in the first place....

    Hooligans

    MARICON
    MARICON
    WEST HAM MARICON

AS a dc Supporter, I don't agree with violence, but it is really up to security to prevent this and until they do this will not stop. Pretty Soon I AM SURE LA NORTE will have to defend themselves against cheap ass mmexican fans, and they will get blamed for the fight, its not if it will happen but when. SECURITY just blows and the team has not eye for handling things like this. They blame us dc fans, yet they look the other way when they are throwing bottles and urine. SOMETIMES ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and SOMEONE will react. suprised it happened in columbus, but then again I am sure security and the team don't do anything to prevent this.

Clearly, the word "hooligan" is racist.

I think this one was used by one of Hitler's SS divisions.

This group is defunct (V-Army), but was specifically claimed by MLSR as being neo-Nazi. Odd, because the Cross of Lorraine was a symbol of French resistance to Germany.

You, sir, are a tool who is uninterested in letting the facts disturb your fantasy.
