OUTGOING: Kenny Cooper to Cardiff City (DONE DEAL)

Posted by MLSR Sunday, July 27, 2008

When FC Dallas fans watch Kenny Cooper suit up against the LA Galaxy today they may be seeing him for the last time.

It's Done Deal according to the BBC.

(Thanks to a loyal MLSR Reader for the tip off.)

"Cardiff have agreed a £2m deal with Major League Soccer for Kenny Cooper and are negotiating personal terms with the FC Dallas striker. (Wales on Sunday)"

While it has been known since pre-Season that Cooper wanted out of Dallas, and while there had been an offer from Rosenborg BK of the Norwegian league, it appears that Cooper will be joining the storied Welsh side in the English Championship.

More here in this article....

Here is an excerpt:

"The Bluebirds have had an offer of around £2m accepted by Major League Soccer, who own the top players in the USA, for the FC Dallas player who has netted eight goals in 16 matches this season.

Cooper, 23 years old and 6ft 3in tall, is a powerful, aggressive striker City manager Dave Jones would love to see playing alongside new goalscorer Ross McCormack in attack.

Cooper was selected for the MLS All-Star first team this season alongside David Beckham and they defeated West Ham United 3-2.

Former Manchester United professional Cooper, who spent three years at Old Trafford, was born in Baltimore, USA, to an English father and would love to make the grade in British football.

Cardiff City would not make any comment today, but Cooper is the player they are going for.

And they are keen to sign him in time for next Friday’s home pre-season friendly against Dutch club Ajax at Ninian Park (7.45pm).

Cooper is due to fly in next week when Cardiff City will show him their training ground and the new stadium being built opposite Ninian Park"

  2. This is much better than going to Norwy and letting your career rot.

If he has any success there it will be hard for bradley to ignore him try as he might

  4. I am from Norway, and I pretty much know everything there is to know about norwegian soccer. I also know alot about english football.

The level in the norwegian league is a little lower than in the cocacola championchip.
The top 6 (12 in the top division) teams in Norway would probably be in the top 15 in the coca cola championchip.
Rosenborg (the best team, although they didnt win last year), would probably be good enough to fight for survival in the Premier league.

    This means:
Rosenborg is a better team than Cariff.
Rosenborg plays international games, and is well known in europe for selling players after sucsess in the Champions league (for example Jon Carew to Valencia for ca. 18 million dollars)

BUT: The championship has proven to be a better place to be if you want to move on to bigger clubs, and many very sucsessfull foreighn players in Norway has moved to the Coca colachampionchip.
Example: Olofinjana (From Brann to Wolves, now in Stoke in Premier league)
Koren (From Lillestrom to West Brom)
    and Mifsud (Lillestrom to Coventry)

All theese players thought it was a step up in their career to move to the next highest level in England.

But there is a difference between Cardiff and the clubs theese players moved to. Cardiff is, and probalby will be a second-division team for a long time. And the chances for Cooper to rot in Cardiff is larger than in Rosenborg, who btw qualified for the UEFA-cup today.

  6. Good. Get him out of here and into England. I saw him play against Denmark at the HDC and loved him. I wanna see this guy get better and get more starts for the national team.

He definitely has the potential to be a great starter for the NATS.
