INCOMING: Hakan Sukur to Toronto FC for $4 Million?

Posted by MLSR Monday, July 14, 2008

According to this site and Lig TV the Turkish striker could be coming to BMO Field.

"According to Lig TV, the Turkish Super Lig's all-time leading scorer Hakan Sukur is close to signing a one year 4 million dollar deal with Toronto FC. Reports state that the veteran 37-year old, who has played for Galatasaray, Inter, Torino, Parma and Blackburn, has been offered a contract by the MLS club and looks warmly on closing out his career in North America."

EDIT: One of the people who sent us this rumor requested: "I would just hope that you can wish my mother a happy 48 as she is an avid reader of MLS-Runors if you post the story."

So happy 48th to Razcle's mom and welcome to the Sunglasses Masses of MLSR.

Here is video of Sukur in action:

  4. BS. No one in their right mind would pay that much for a guy THAT old.

That money would be better spent on a younger better player.

Sukur is a world class player.

To people who are questioning his age, well how many young quality players want to play in MLS instead of Europe? Not too many if you ask me.

BTW, Sukur is better signing than Gomes.

Anyway, Sukur still can score goals. I remember how the Turkish were questioning Turkey's manager of not including him in Euro 2008 roster since Sukur was playing so well for them during Euro 2008 qualifying round. If some EPL reject like Angel can dominate this league, then just imagine what Sukur is capable of doing in MLS.

  12. On a scale of 1 to 5 for this happening... this is a minus 5.

    $4M for 1 year for a 37yr old?

    Yeah, ok.

  14. He only cost $200K for the rest of THIS SEASON! That's a GREAT bargain..The $4 Mil is for next year.

  16. $4 million is nothing to MLSE (owners of TFC). I don't understand why people are making big deal here about the money. If this rumour is true, then his salary will only count $200K this season and next season, $400K in terms of salary cap.

  18. Sukur was great in his day, back in the crustacean era, but we don't need to sign another old timer who just wants to come here and collect his last pay check.
    Pass,

  20. According to a Turkish futbol blog, this is a fabricated story by the Turkish media. No deal!

  22. I live in Toronto but am a big fan of Galatasaray (the club Sukur is leaving) and I did not want him there nor do I want him here in Toronto. The guy used to be good but has been dreadful to watch lately as he gets confused whenever the ball touches his foot, only thing he is useful in is heading and scoring in open nets (even though I've seen him miss some of those too).
