EDITORIAL: Irate Crew Fan and Protector of Columbus Racist Accuses Greg Lalas and MLSR of "White Guilt"

We have been willing to let the whole Columbus racist Crew hooligan thing go. It seemed obvious that the Crew and their fans were powerless to find out who fans who yelled racist slurs and threw objects including smoke bombs and full water bottles at New England players in a video first posted here, were.

That was until today.

Today we received a letter that thoroughly shocked us. It comes from a Columbus Crew fan who in his words "knows who the offender is." And who didn't report it because the guy "has a history of racial slurs without any repercussions following."

However the most shocking aspect of this is that he goes on to accuse writer and TV commentator Greg Lalas and us of suffering from "White Guilt" a reductionist term that is slightly racist itself.

To be honest perhaps we should probably be less shocked about all of this considering the source. No doubt we will once again be subject to angry emails, threats of lawsuits, or even death from Columbus "fans" who have little else to do with their time for publishing an excerpt from his long rambling letter. However we feel that in the interest of completeness and of justice (if in fact the guy who was identified by the writer truly was the man on the video) that this must be done.

Since the author did not request anonymity we feel OK in publishing his email address should you wish to share your thoughts on racism and "white guilt".

subject Crew racial slurs

The act of one idiot does not mean the entire Crew fan base and organization should be penalized. I took serious offense to your article that attempted to paint the entire organization as involved or protecting someone. As a successful business owner I learned long ago that alienating my customers is not a good idea. I wonder how many Crew fans there are that will never use your website again. I know I certainly will not.

Please don't then. We really would rather you didn't. As a business owner you should understand that your frequent use of our website constitutes interest in what we post. It does not however mean that you must agree with everything we post. The fact that you took time to write us speaks volumes. We for the record did not attempt to paint the entire Crew fan base and organization as racist, as some blogs allege. Rather, we did raise serious questions about certain hardcore elements amongst the crew fans and questioned why it was taking so long for any real action to ban the person(s) involved from Crew Stadium. Something we might add that we learned recently, after contacting Crew representatives, still has not happened.

Greg Lalas and you need to grow up and realize that there are morons in every crowd, at every game, and I could find evidence at nearly any sporting event. Where were you when Fire fans or Toronto fans came to town?

Please refrain from pointing the finger at others and insulting the fan bases of Chicago and Toronto. While they are loud, rowdy and fairly hostile to opposing teams, never once has either crossed the line into the bad behaviour, racism and hooliganism of *SOME* Columbus fans at the game vs New England which was the whole point. You can not blame your city's, club's, or fan base's behavioral and/or cultural nadir on the actions of others. That is immature and shows a lack of grasp on the gravity of the actions which took place that night in Columbus.

I was insulted every bit as much by things they were saying to Crew fans and me.

And yet by your own admission below you stood by and did nothing as it all went on behind you.

Nor will I sit back and let my rights be violated by your Nazi approach to handle or root out the offender

Classic. We report a story about inaction in having a racist fan banned and he blames the messengers and labels us Nazis.

I believe you and Greg Lalas must have a little bit too much white guilt. Must have been something you did in your past.

Unbelievable.

Besides I know who the offender was. He was sitting right behind me. I didn’t report it because the guy has a history of racial slurs without any repercussions following.

So then why didn't you turn him in THIS time? Let us get this straight. The guy has a history of repeatedly spouting off racist slurs at Crew stadium yet you sit idly by? That's actually worse than what we had suspected was going on.

As far as penalizing the Crew a point, they already were. Replays clearly show Dube was at least a yard and a half over the 18 before Joseph struck the ball.

And clearly your understanding of the game is as cloudy as your understanding of racism or common decency. Adios.

That is unbelievable. It sounds to me like that guy has a bit of a guilty conscience for not turning in the offender.

Saying that the organization needs to do something to curb this behavior is significantly different from villifying an entire fanbase. Methinks your emailer doth protest too much.

From C-bus with love.

No get back to rumoring!

I'm a TFC fan, I was one of those fans in Columbus back in March and i'll be in Chicago this weekend. I'm not a member of any of the TFC supporters groups, but i'm totally insulted that this guy would dare try to equate TFC fans with that kind of racist crap. TFC fans cheer, sing, cherp and bring life to TFC games, they don't resort to shouting racist names. They don't need to. They have class.

And I know as you do that not all Columbus supporters are not in the same boat as this jerk because when I was down there, my friends and I hung out with a bunch of Crew fans after the game, totally randomly. It was the highlight of the trip and made for a great experience.

Finally, being a teacher, one thing we teach our students in my school is that being a bystander is just as bad as being a bully. The bystander gives the bully comfort and makes them feel that it's easier to bully. That's what happened here, and if this guy knows exactly who it was and was really disgusted by it, he should turn this guy in, plain and simple.

Im not a Columbus fan (LAG all the way) but your constant coverage of the Crew and its fans is getting a bit old. Who cares about them. They make up probably less than 5% of all MLS fans. I think its time to rename your site to "Columbus Rumors - for the racist between the fans".

Look, your site is getting old. You cover too much Crew news and outdated rumours (Dominguez to LAG was a day late).

I see youre moderating comments now. This wont hit the page but at least you'll get to hear from an MLS fan.

I think its time I consolidate my soccer blogs. Youre already the laugh of BigSoccer anyhow and not taken seriously.

I dont know LA Fan. To me as a Crew fan it seems like there isn't ENOUGH Crew news. Its all LA Galaxy, Toronto FC, DC United, Houston Dynamo from where I sit. As for Eduardo Dominguez, I give MLSR credit, they may have been a "day late" to some BigSoccerr board but they were a week ahead of Steve Goff reporting it as breaking news.

By the way BigSoccer itself is the laughingstock of US Soccer.

Don't believe everything you read on the "intertubes".

I am an LAG fan and I agree with the crew fan saying that MLSR is way better than bigsoccer. the only other blogs that r good and stay to their stories are american soccer ives and goff. This news is interesting and will not get old until the end of the season becuz this incident can and could increase rascism in the league. rascism is an issue that will never go away in this world and is always present never old.

A day late maybe to LA fans, but to the rest of MLS fans.

Actually, the guy's admission that he knows who the racist asshole is makes this relevant.

Forward this to MLS and the Crew's FO, local Columbus media might help as well. I'm sure they'd like to know who shouted out those things and who's helping in covering for him.

BS & MLSR are both jokes, yet here we all are.....

sad state of affairs if you look at the amount of coverage the league still gets though, isn't it.

And as far as the writer of the email is concerned....some TFC fans piss on a fence and they're racist? Please. I don't care for the KFC kids, but they're city is every bit as ethnically diverse as any major city--maybe even moreso, and so is their fanbase. Cowlumbus....well, isn't. End of story there.

And as for even attempting to let Chicago cross your lips (or out your finger tips), you better think again. We PWN popcan stadium. And now, for the first time in your pitiful existence, 12 years into the league being around you have more than just cows and tumbleweed in your sht stadium, and suddenly you think you're on par with either group?! You've just been embarassed for all these years by a true and solid fanbase and actual supporters culture in the form of both TFC and Chicago.

Racism to the degree you have down there in flyoverland isn't a joke, and if this guy knows who it is, he should turn that person in. it isn't all crew fans that are like that asshat (I hope), and now that you have more than 5 people coming out to games, that 1 sorry SOB won't be missed.

Is this the same fan that wrote in to inform you of the Hejduk and Ruiz trade? I mean come on. You ever think that maybe someone is pulling your leg just to see if they can get it all stirred up again?

This fan, is a flaming fucking idiot, get over yourself bud you need a fucking life, your saying you will never use this website again? good go and die in a corner, fucking racist asshole.

MLSR, it is your duty to forward this email. If the person was indeed right in front of the person yelling, then he/she is likely in front of the camera that csught the initial video. If the person user their real name, then this info sent to MLS and the Crew FO will identify a person who has first hand information of what happened. In protecting the offender, the person penning the email is guilty by harboring. Simple solution, give up the name of face equal penalty. If MLS or the FO does nothing, then they are guilty.
Please let this subject die. for once, we Crew fans have something to be excited about in the product on the field. I am sick of enduring this shite. MLS, FO, MLSR, put up and shut up, let's get back to focusing on the beautiful game please.

Rest assured, we forwarded the email to MLS before posting it here.

interesting only 45 minutes away from Columbus!

It is interesting that the issue of racism has become so heavy here. If we as fans of the sport truly want to keep soccer on a high moral level than why are we not discussing the actions of S. Joseph of N.E. Revs. He flipped off the fans, he is a paid professional and should be held to the higher standards than the fans. Unless the MLS took action against him then I would assume the MLS approves their entire fan base to flip people off when they get upset, even the little kids.

The hypocricy of so many Crews fans online is really quite amusing.

Does anyone remember back at the start of the season when a handful of TFC fans were busted in Columbus for urinating outdoors? The BigSoccer boards were on fire with every single Toronto fan getting painted with a single brush afterwards. It's funny how the actions of the few become the deeds of the many.

Crew fans, consider this karmic pay-back.
