Superliga is back! The semifinals kick off tonight at 10pm eastern and you can watch the games here in English. And view the Semifinals scoreboard here.

How appropriate that we'd receive a pretty good Superliga rumor. We call this good due to the fact that we like it and hope that it happens, not that we think it is probable. Indeed by the submitter's own admission he rates it a 1.5 on a 10 point scale.

This comes to us from a frequent MLSR contributor:

Could this year's SuperLiga be the last to held exclusively in the USA?

Information has reached MLS-RUMORS that next year's SuperLiga possibly could be split between Mexico and the US, with one group playing their games in the US, and the other group playing in Mexico. The two semifinals would also be split 1-1 between Mexico and the US, with the 2009 final being held in the US.

This potential move is positioned to increase the tournaments visibility in Mexico (the tournament takes place during the Mexican pre-season), and to see if they can get better attendance then some of the games in the US (3 of the Group B games did not reach 10,000 in attendance (Pachuca at New England (9,614), Santos-Pachuca (Played at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas, 6,157 attendance), and Chivas USA-New England (played at Titan Stadium due to the X-Games being booked at HDC, 4,738 attendance)

Do you think the SuperLiga should be played in the US AND Mexico? Would that give it more legitimacy? Do you even care about it? If not why not?

Time again for this video:

  6. i give zero credibility to this rumor. reason being, 8k fans in the US paying average $20 per seat is a hell of a lot more money than 8k fans paying 50 pesos.

that being said, the bottom line is this . . . this tourney didn't do well (this season compared to last) because of the mexican teams attending. atlante and santos draw awful in the USofA. for all their success, pachuca isn't that much better. aside from chivas guad, did anyone really think these games were going to get the attendance from last season?

bottom line, mexican teams play almost all preseason games outside of mexico because of the $$$. that will never changes

  8. kevin --

sooner rather than later this tourney is going to get more important, reason being . . . i think SUM is going to figure a way to combine this tourney with interliga and put the copa libetadores bids on the line.

  10. It's more recognition for the MLS. Im okay with it, as long as they still play in DC

  16. I love the Superliga. I think it is actually more important to Mexican Americans. They love to see their teams play. I blame the poor attendance on New England and playing in College stadiums. I think that the new Champions League is going to have even worse attendance problems in the USA. People in the New England area do not come out to see Santos they surely will not come to see Joe Public.

  18. Here's a brilliant idea to boost attendance: no more 10pm weeknight games.

  20. SuperLiga is OK as long as it means something. How about a change from Interliga to SuperLiga so that MLS gets presence in Conmebol tourneys? I know the mexicans won't let their spots in Copa Libertadores go, but then again they have to play qualifiers to get in against other south american teams. Bring it on.
