REPORT: Our US Open Cup Coverage Plan

Posted by MLSR Sunday, June 8, 2008

The US Open Cup First Round kicks off this week. Additionally there is one final MLS play-in game taking place in Peoria, IL.

A lot of hardcore fans complain about the lack of coverage of the USA's national cup, one of the oldest in the world having been established in 1914. The very nature of the competition that bears Lamar Hunt's name is that amateur and semi-professional sides could in theory be giant-killers and take on MLS sides (as Dallas Roma FC did in 20) on the face of it, should capture the imagination of many football fanticos. Sadly, many can not get too excited about a competition with little if any broadcast coverage.

With a spot in the new CONCACAF Champions League on the line for whoever wins it all, the competition has taken a new dimension. For many fans this may be the best or only way they might see their side get through to take on the best in the region.

Well we at MLSR recognize this and are going to try to do what little we can to increase coverage and awareness of this important domestic competition in co-operation with USOpenCup.com and USLLive.com

So here are our plans for a big night of US Open Cup action, Tuesday, June 10.

We will be providing the following links to watch/listen to the following games:

All times Eastern:

7:30pm Open Cup 1st Round Video - RWB Adria at Rochester in Rochester, NY

8:00pm MLS Play-in Match Video - Columbus Crew at Chicago Fire in Peoria, Illinois

10:00pm Open Cup 1st Round Audio - Hollywood United at Portland Timbers FC in Portland, OR

This all assumes the above are streamed free online. If not then we will not be able to bring them to you. We may add other matches to this list as we find out more about broadcasts of them.

Here is the current map of who is involved in the games on Tuesday:

  6. I'll be attending the Sahuaros/Sounders match in Phoenix on Tuesday. Go Sahuaros!

  7. Bob Says:
  8. The Portland game will not be shown live. It will be on USL Live on demand sometime after the game. And it isn't going to include audio so good luck figuring it all out.

  10. www.channelsurfing.net usually shows all the payperview/sporting events I like to watch(streaming).

It's live so you gotta be online watching it when the game/match actually is being played/fought.

I wonder if they will show these matches?

  12. We will provide links to video or audio of any FREE broadcasts but will only provide links to the pay per view signup pages of the pay per view broadcasts.

We believe EVERY US Open Cup match should be available for viewing for free as it helps the exposure of the competition and helps the sport inthis country. It also is in the spirit of an "Open" competition.

However not everyone shares our beliefs and so the university that is hosting the last MLS play in match between Chicago and Columbus are charging for the right to view it online.

We will be providing a comprehensive list of available broadcasts of tonight's matches in about an hour and a half. Stay tuned.
