As the Riverfront Times article states, a national homeless soccer league is "a little out there."
Yet, Liberia-born David Flomo and soccer-mad Community Director Keith Deisner couldn't wait to get involved and form a team in St. Louis a few months ago. Recruiting their players from the local homeless shelter and holding training sessions in an empty parking lot, the six-man St. Louis side have earned a spot at the Homeless USA Cup on June 29th. The title match will be played outside RFK Stadium after the players take in the DC United-Galaxy match. All of the travel and fees are covered by the national governing body, Street Soccer USA.
If the players impress officials, 16 will be chosen to represent the United States at this December's Homeless World Cup 2008 in Melbourne, Australia. Scotland are the reigning champions.
A big shout out from all of us at MLSR to those involved in a great effort using soccer to help people. And we encourage MLS supporters to have a look at the match on the 29th.
