As you probably know by now, the US Open Cup kicks into high gear as the first round gets underway tomorrow night across the country. Sure, the matches for the most part will not be televised and sure most of these contests will take place at small stadiums, college and even high school pitches but that should take nothing away from the fact that this is the first round of OUR National Championship, Our FA Cup if you will.

And nothing should take away from the fact that the winner of this competition goes on to play in the CONCACAF Champions League. When all the dust has settled tomorrow night there will be 16 fewer sides in the running.

One thing we noticed when looking at the map of clubs involved in this year's Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is that there will be matches in or involving places which have organized supporters for MLS expansion into their area.

So we are challenging you guys to get out there and support a side representing your area in the Open Cup. After all it is the only near term hope of seeing a local side have a chance at facing one in MLS in a later round.

With that in mind...

You Borough Boys want an MLS club based in Brooklyn or Queens? Then support the Brooklyn Knights (Brooklyn) or NY Pancyprian Freedoms (Queens).

You Miami Ultras want a new team in Miami? Well here's your chance to show you're worthy. Get behind Miami FC.

People pining for a return of MLS to Tampa? Then show your support for the Clearwater Galactics or Bradenton Academics.

Hey, you St Louis EADS Brigade people, we all know your history, now show how much you deserve to be in MLS by showing support for St Louis Lions in our nation's oldest knock-out competition.

Sons of Ben, while there is no Philadelphia area team in the cup, why not get behind Harrisburg City? They after all, wear blue, albeit a darker shade than Sons of Ben Blue. Besides it gives you guys road trip practice.

Likewise Cleveland people... You may support the Crew in MLS but you have to admit the rendering of that stadium in Summit County looked pretty sweet. So back the Cleveland City Stars.

Phoenix Rising? Oh really? Well then rise to the challenge by supporting Arizona Sahuaros in the Cup.

Austin and San Antonio people let down by the collapse of San Antonio's entry into MLS should throw in their lot with the Austin Aztex.

And nearly everyone who has bemoaned the fact that MLS has no presence in the south should show they deserve it by getting behind either the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina Railhawks FC, Charlotte Eagles, Charleston Battery and Wilmington Hammerheads as your region is well represented in the Cup so you are spoiled for choice.

Lastly, all you people who think Los Angeles deserves two clubs but one should not be named Chivas USA, well then root for an upset by Hollywood United or Los Angeles Legends.

Regardless of who you support in the US Open Cup you can find all the latest scores and news at www.USOpenCup.com

  2. Haha... as a resident of Philadelphia I can say that no one wants to take a horrendous drive to Harrisburg to see the Islanders [sic] play. Between the horrible traffic and driving to the worst city in the state I will gladly wait for the nice riverfront stadium outside of the city.

  10. Dear MLS RUMORS

My name is Christian and I'm the Director of Hispanic Outreach for the Borough Boys. It was brought to my attention that MLS RUMORS was calling out the MLS Expansion supporter groups to support their local USL sides in a bid for the US OPEN CUP. Unfortunately MLS RUMORS has shown up a bit late. The Borough Boys have ALREADY been there, done that!

On May 17, 2008 the Borough Boys went out in full force to support the LI Rough Riders against the Ocean City Barons in their run for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. A great time was had by all, even the Ocean City Barons, who were the butt of our chants.

The Borough Boys brought the atmosphere and the fun. We even had our own little ball boy who helped out on the field!

At the bottom I'm adding the links to the BIG SOCCER forums which has the discussions and the pictures from the event.

In closing I would like to thank MLS RUMORS for bringing forth the challenge and allowing others to emulate the Borough Boys in their goal of bring a TEAM to the greatest city in the world, NEW YORK CITY!

  12. Kudos to the Borough Boys for stepping up to do that. We were unaware of that. You're great supporters and we hope you get a team in NYC proper very soon. Best regards.

  14. Just got off conference call where MLS Phoenix Rising finalized our arrangements for the Sahuaros vs the MLS-bound Sounders.
This MLS Phoenix Rising announcement has been distributed to our membership and we're looking forward to a good turnout and a Sahuaros victory.

  18. The GCSC of St. Louis has been renamed the Eads Brigade, and if the Lions had a home game we would be there. Minnesota will be a tough test.
