REPORT: Riot At Wild Houston Dynamo Match Saturday?

The following 0-0 scoreless draw between Houston Dynamo and CD Chivas USA on Saturday was anything but boring. In fact it can only be described as wild:

8 yellow cards, 4 to CD Chivas USA, 4 to Dynamo and 1 Red Card to CD Chivas USA's legendary defender Claudio Suarez(pictured above being sent off) CD Chivas USA's Lawson Vaughn having his face bicycle kicked by Houston's Dwayne DeRosario and being out injured for 4-6 weeks as a result, a pyrotechnics employee blown down and severely burned by fireworks he set up going off prematurely during pre-game ceremonies and former President George Bush Sr. meeting with Dynamo players and the two-time, back to back, defending MLS champions still searching for their first win of the 6 week old season, fights on and off the pitch and we now have the following disturbing report.

Lets just say from the outset, lest Toronto FC fans thought we were singling them out, we're not. Furthermore, we HATE to publish bad news, but in a league where everything out of "official sources" is never anything negative, we feel it necessary to inject some reality when bad news occurs. Sometimes things go wrong. Sometimes bad things happen. We're all adults here (and if you're not you shouldn't be reading this blog.) We will talk about things other outlets of MLS info ignore here, it's what we do.

As we said before, we do not condone violence towards people or inanimate objects.

We had received rumors about these incidents over the weekend but held off on publishing anything until we had something more concrete than an eyewitness email. This was deemed the prudent thing to do mainly due to the timing with the incidents in Toronto still being fresh on people's mind. Anyway, now details are emerging thanks to a police report that has surfaced

This story comes to us courtesy of Bernardo Fallas over on they Soccer y Fútbol blog.

In the following police report the incidents of fighting on the pitch were described as a riot between fans or supporters of both CD Chivas USA and Houston Dynamo, whose teams have gotten into fist fights and shoving matches on the pitch on more than one occasion in the past :

The police report for the incident Saturday reads:

Riot/Disorderly Conduct/Aggravated Assault -- 5/3/08 9:42 p.m. -- Entrance 11 --Edmund -- Several visitors, attending the Houston Dynamo game, were involved in a riot. The visitors were fans of both playing teams. While attempting to break up the riot, it was found that one individual was stabbed in the back by an unknown individual. During the course of the investigation, four individuals were also issued Harris County citations for Disorderly Conduct.

This is not the first time there has been such an incident at a Dynamo home game. One recalls this incident from last years western conference final:

Dynamo and Chivas fans and supporters, what do you think of this? Are these people Dynamo fans or just people who come to the games to fight?

MLSR's take is the same as Bernardo Fallas's: Fighting at games is not passion.
This is passion:

Guess it is time for "Golden Boy" Security to start busting some heads and sorting security out in Houston.

With %95 humidity and oil refinery stench in the air year round I guess it makes for grumpy locals.

k, after the game...My wife, son mother in law and I waited a few minutes for the crow to clear and proceeded to our car. We walked out got in the car. Right before we went in our car, a bunch of chivas fans were walking out. We got in our car...all of the sudden, we see a fight break out, and another and another...security guards or cops started coming from the stadium trying to stop the people from fighting. We watched in awe as the people were beating each other...we had pulled out of our spot and decided just to stay still, stopped for a minute. Three minutes later people start running towards us and a two cops and two strangers were fighting right on the hood of the car. By this time the whole deal had scalated to near a riot. My wife was screaming scared telling me to leave, my son was terrified and my mother in law was quoting Jesus and trying to pray. I was scared but I was still just looking around to see where the bullets were going to originate from. I told my son to get down as the fights intesified, he then was really scared a pushed his head down behind the passengers right seat, I was trying to keep every one calm, but the violence just kept scalating. They were fighting like animals hitting each other with the flags and what ever they can find. Finally one of the cops had to pepper spray one of the guys that was right on our car hood, the pepper spray went into our car through the AC. The cops had their metal sticks or what ever you call them out, and ready to start beating on people. They looked scared...there were too many people fighting and being ignorant. I could not leave as there was a guy laying down on the floor right on the path of my front tires, and my wife kept yelling" go gog go please just go" But I could move, I was afraid for my family....We finally were able to pull out but the massive congestion outside was horrible. I saw cops cursing out people on the streets, and kids challenging the cops. The saddest thing I saw was that in the mist of the fighters or idiots fighting there were people with small children. It was horrible and my wife swor to never again bring my kid and she's also considering not going back herself. As for me, i know I can take care of myself but I would not put my family in that predicament.

I'd to see those Chivas supporters come up here to T.O. and try to kick off, they'd have the shock of their lives.

Would all this violence stop if they just changed the name of the team? They are not attracting any crowds to their home games, and there marketing strategy has not worked with the use of the Chivas brand. Now with all the fan violence being caused by ignorant Chivas USA fans, it only makes sense to change the name.

BTW Javier these Chivas are not from Mexico look at their name it says USA. Pendejo.

Wow. That's really unpleasant.

Thank you, javier, and any involved in the riot. Stupidity like this has the potential to kill MLS and soccer in the US.

BUT.... like that guy said, it IS a good way to filter that "family fun time, lets get a hot dog a relax peacefully while watching a FUTEBOL game". i dont like violence but this does have the chance to create rivalries and SUSPENSE and EXCITMENT for the game/more anticipation for a goal (which is where those ROARS you hear in other countries when a goal is scored:http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=RlMSrw5Dq3U&eurl=http://www.theoffside.com/ )

this creates a greater/more rabid fan base in the mls, which hasnt been seen before. although i Hate the violence, this problem has already happened and there is no way to stop it. as i said in my post, the affects of this event is already happening which filters the fans, from the spectators.

ps. im brasilian and i see this almost every game and the fans/atmosphere in rival games are CRAZY. i would love to see this in the MLS

What is it with some "hardcore" sports fans and their inferiority complex? Not just in soccer but in every organized team sport. Hey great the guy you're arguing with is a fan of the Red Wings and you think that team sucks. Is it really worth coming to blows over? The Sacramento Kings will not rush to your aid if you decide to get into a fight with an LA Lakers fan.

It's one thing to stand up for yourself or your family if someone is threatening them. If someone talks trash about a sports team you support.

Is it just some misguided sense of belonging that fuels these people? Is it the booze? Did their parents not love them enough as a child? Someone give me some insight here.
