REPORT: Serious Fireworks Incident At Houston Dynamo Match

Pitch level fireworks (as pictured at left) are a tradition in many MLS stadia.

During Saturday night's match between CD Chivas USA and Houston Dynamo at Robertson Stadium in Houston, TX, 20,000 people watched in horror as an employee of Pyrotecnico of Louisiana was burnt and thrown to ground when the fireworks he installed went off prematurely during the national anthem during the pre-game ceremonies. Though he was stretchered off the pitch with blood coming from his face he is said to be in good condition at Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital.

More here.

Perhaps it is time to re-think the practice of pitch level fireworks? What do you think?

I disagree. Keep the pitch-level fireworks.

The thing about a freak accident is it is inherently a freak accident, and as such, extremely unlikely to occur, when done under correct safety measures by trained professionals.

While this was indeed an unfortunate event and I'm happy the man wasn't seriously hurt your report is incorrect. Contrary to your report he did not get 'blown off the platform'. He was in fact on the field moving the fireworks box from one spot to another when they went off in his hands.

I'd chalk it up as part of the job of a pyrotechnic worker. Certain jobs have inherent risks and regardless of whether pitch-level fireworks are discontinued, pyrotechnic employees would still face the same inherent danger at their next set-up, wherever that may be.

One non-lethal accident in 13 years is hardly a black mark against pitch-level fireworks.

Tragedy? C'mon guys! Show a bit more common sense than to use what is an already overused -- and misused -- term.
A tragedy is a soldier in Iraq learning that his wife and child back home were killed in a traffic accident.
This was a freak accident and the guy is getting released from the hospital without serious injuries.
Your headlines are getting worse than the national enquirer.

The people who witnessed it said it was tragic. The guy was pretty bloody and it looked as though his whole body had been burned and part of his face "fused".

What would you call that? This was not a firecracker going off in his hand.

The guy is being released from the hospital. There was no disastrous loss of life or injury.
It was a serious accident, not a tragedy.
People use the word tragedy way too often to describe things that may be serious, but are not tragic. It's gotten to the point where people don't know what the word tragedy means anymore. We've become obsessed with making everything bigger and more meaningful than it really is.
This was a very serious and unfortunate event, but please don't make it out to be something it isn't. Not everything has to be hollywoodized. We'll still read your blog even if you don't distort reality to make your headlines more eye-catching.

Duly noted and corrected. Thanks.

Fireworks are fucking gay anyways

Fireworks add nothing to an ordinary soccer game. Just part of the usual MLS overhype. Save em for July 4.

I was right there when it happened. We were all pretty shocked.

They were the kind that shoot out to both sides with bright red flares. The guy was leaning over them, head right in between the V shape and they just blasted him right in the face. He stumbled backwards, looking pretty disoriented, and then kneeled down. What was disappointing is how long it took the medics to make their way over. It was obviously really serious and a cop was on his walkie talkie instantly, but the poor guy just kneeled there for a few minutes before help arrived.

I have no doubt he got some bad burns, I just hope he's not blind.
