INCOMING: Bruce Arena Back to DC United?

Rating: 3 (Possible)

Could the former DC United, and US Mens National Team coach be headed back to RFK Stadium? Maybe.

Following an email published here from an anonymous source yesterday regarding DC United manager/coach Tom Soehn being in the hot seat, we just received the following email from a different source, close to the club regarding what appears to be an inquiry made as to Arena's availability for his position. At the emailer's request we will keep their identity anonymous:

First, I would very much like to remain anonymous. I have close contacts at the club (DC United), and I would not want myself or my contacts exposed. Now, I was told that this is very preliminary, but apparently some of the management at United have been in contact with former coach Bruce Arena. I was told that the conversation was only to gauge interest, but don't be surprised if Tom Soehn's exit (if it comes to that) is a leading segway for the return of DC United's most storied coach.

Bruce Arena rose to national prominence as the coach of DC United between 1996-1998. These are considered United's glory years.

During his tenure he led United to three MLS Cups and won two of them. He also led the team to win a CONCACAF Champion's Cup, the Inter-American Cup and a US Open Cup. Following this he went on to become manager/coach of the US Mens National Team before being fired after a poor World Cup performance in 2006. He then signed on with DC United's I-95 rivals, Red Bull New York in August of 2006 but was let go in November of 2007 with two years left on his contract.

Could it be possibly Arena will fill a space left vacant later this summer? And if s, after a pretty forgetable performance at the New Jersey based club, might he be able to once again lead United to glory a decade after he left? Only time will tell.

Soehn is not getting it done at DC. I like the idea of Bruce coming back. I think this needs to be done sooner than later. Before DC gets too far behind. That way Bruce can have plenty of time to pull the team back up. Bruce would be rejoining Francis Doe. Bruce would defnitely be a good candidate for the job.

This seems as BS as the Soehn rumor. Neither makes any sense for DC.

At least it sounds like Tommy will get a Segway on his way out.

You guys are a hoot.

This would be a total disaster. One of the main reasons The Bruce did so well here in the early years of the league is because of his UVA player connections, which he no longer has. This showed during his time with PinkBull. At DC, he'd be looking at the same scenario, with the same lofty expectations. Sorry Bruce. That shark has been jumped.

But isn't he concentrating his efforts on completing that biography on Jefferson?

I agree that maybe its time Soehn and United part ways but screw bringing Bruce back. I hear Sven-Goran Eriksson is gonna be looking for a job soon.

Bruce burned a lot of bridges.

He is better than Soehn, really, better than any coach in MLS, and will be sure to tell you. Just ask him.

True, but pride is necessary to all men who would do anything in life....and all men eventually fall. The only question is the timing, and knowing for sure what is a tumble and what is Fall.
