INCOMING: Brian McBride Back to Crew?

This rumor comes to us courtesy of the BBC.
It seems to be the first mention we've had of him returning to the Columbus where he played his football from 1996-2004 before joining the Craven Cottage based side.

Brian McBride will be offered a new one-year deal with Fulham but the 35-year-old American striker may still opt to join Columbus Crew in the States.

I certainly don't see this happening. Toronto FC has a discovery claim on him, and he has expressed interest in finishing his career in Chicago.

Columbus has a DP spot available Chicago does not. I think it is a real possibility. No one in Europe is going to offer a 35 year old striker anything more than a one year deal. Columbus could offer him a two or three year deal in the million a year range and I see him taking it. Toronto FC can trade his rights for some allocation cash.

He's going to Chicago. Columbus has a DP spot b/c they don't have the money to pay a DP level salary. Linking a older player to the club they spent the most time in the past with is just lazy reporting (i.e. British journalism). Toronto already has too much money tied up to make a big signing but I could see them trading away the DP slot.

Chicago has the tradeable assets no one else has. Their defense is sick and they still haven't used Conde, Marmol, Robinson, or their captain Brown.

Actually Columbus does have the money to pay McBride and have stated many times that if McBride wants to come back to Columbus he will be a DP.

Columbus has plenty of money to pay Mcbride should the Legend want to return.

TFC couldn't afford him with all the money they've spent lately. Plus i very much doubt he would play for them willingly.

This all comes down to if he wants to play for the club where he made his name and is a legend or if he wants to go back to his hometown team.

Here's what I don't get, how can Toronto have a discovery claim on one of the all-time MLS greats?? Another confusing rule from Garber and Co.

I treat McBride and Griffey Jr. the same in this aspect. At this point in their careers they can go to whatever club they want to. They've earned it. (sorry I'm a baseball guy as well)

But Brian if you're reading this...Please DON'T GO TO TFC or CH*CAGO!! Come back to Columbus!!

we will be ridding of Cunny to sign a DP but i doubt itll be McBride. If he does come back we do have rights and im sure we will trade him off to whoever wants him for a stack of cash. Dont think he will fit into the plans (especially if he doesnt want to be there).

PS
its not a discovery claim its allocations and San Jose used theirs on the Haitian striker (his name escapes me). As a result of being last last year, we got next up.

McBride will go where he wants. He has more respect in this country than the whole league entity combined.

McBride is as big of a legend as this country has ever seen with this sport.

He spent Eight years in C-bus. I could see him spending two more.

Btw, Crew is willing to offer him DP money. I think he is who they have been holding their DP for all along. I'm 100% percent sure they offered McBride the DP Crew spot last summer too. I remember reading it in the Dispatch. But, McBride wanted to stay at Fulham at the time.

Btw, I have a list here: http://crewonespot.blogspot.com/2008/05/come-on-brian-join-us.html

Of reasons other then Chicago being his hometown that Brian would rather go to Columbus. It's basically a wash.

If Toronto can actually put a discovery on them they can still get trumped by any other team that is willing to use an allocation or a DP slot (with that trumping both). Columbus can certainly afford BMB since they were very active in trying to land Zurawski (sp?).
