Has it even been decided that further expansion in Canada is the way to go? Just as Obama promises dialogue, maybe American soccer fans should commit to one about the direction of our country's professional league. I know that there hasn't been one yet.
the sport needs Canada to develop even further.
"Change... is coming to America"
That's a load of crap.
Is this the US first division or the Canadian?
If you guys can't form a league on your own don't ruin ours with your hooligans and drunk fans who then become fodder for soccer haters in the media here.
Expanding to Toronto was a mistake and we are all just beginning to pay for it.
Wow some of these comments must be coming from people who are on drugs.
Ever since TorontoFC entered the league and was a smashing successes eveyone and their mother lined up to get a team..
since Toronto FC, the league added 3 teams and 30mil per.. where toronto paid only 10mil a year before..
yeah we really screwed you..
Congrats Montreal great stadium. I am happy to see positive soccer developments anywhere in CONCACAF.
Ruining your league with hooligans and drunk fans? So I guess what happened after the Chivas/Houston game must've been the fault of the Canadians as well.
The trouble in Houston had nothing to with the Canadians. Someone else was responsible for that. See how much fun it is being a US soccer fan? You get from both borders. My opposition to Canadian teams has nothing to do, by the way, with what happened in Toronto. It has everything to do with the fact that the team is in Toronto.
Me not wanting Montreal in the league is completely seperate form me feelings of Toronto. In this case Toronto should not be the reason to expand further into Canada. Only if the local situation warrants it.
Who cares if the league has Canadian teams? Borders between countries always change, what will remain are good franchises. If Montreal is a good addition, why not? I am opposed to Vancouver however
Exactly. Because the A-League is sooo un-Australian with a New Zealand team, the Championship is ruined with Cardiff City, and AS Monaco has destroyed the integrity of Ligue 1. NOT giving Montreal a team would be ridiculous and irresponsible on MLS's part
MLS needs to put a team in the south and Miami is the right choice.
Stop taking drugs people. Vancouver, Portland, Montreal, and St. Louis would all be great additions to Major League Soccer. If they place the stadium in a nice downtown area (places exist in 3 out of the 4 above teams), we will have great passionate soccer in our region. How could any legitimate soccer fan disagree with that?
Miami already had a team. You don't support your local teams. The Marlins won two championships in 1/10 the time it took the Red Sox and the White Sox to win one (not to mention the Cubs winning none) and there is no support for that team. Show us how the South can support a franchise. It's American Football or nothing down there.
The Braves (arguably the most successful franchise in the 90s) couldn't sell out playoff games!!!!!
If we NEED a southern team, the choices are:
1)Atlanta
2)Miami
3)Cary, NC (keep it a small club)
About Atlanta, I don't know how any sports league can look seriously at that city!? It's the worst sports city in North America. The people there don't support any team not called the Falcons (even if they are winners).
About Miami, I think they deserve a second chance (After Montreal, Vancouver, and St. Louis). MLS has a much more sound advertising strategy than they did in the '90's. They are having much more success reaching the Latin community in many markets accross the US. I think that if they have solid ownership, and reach out to the Latin community, they'll do very well. As for the Marlins...would you support a team that's ownership sells-off every good player you have every few years? The Marlins are a failure because of ownership, not Miami.
About Canada, I'm Canadian, and I see the passion Canada has for soccer! I see the newspaper coverage for grassroots soccer. I see the excitement for the Champion's League Qualifying games. Montreal has the highest average attendace in USL, and Vancouver draws very well too (although in a very samll Swangard). TorontoFC is arguably the strongest club in MLS (very close with DCU) in terms of support.
MLS needs Canada, and Canada needs MLS!
