While over 20,272 braved a cloudy 43F degree day to see Real Salt Lake vs Chicago in Salt Lake City Utah, and 15,553 braved a rainy 40F Chicago win over New England last night, don't expect the MLS schedule to change drastically, at least for a decade.

According to this report, at MLS Confidential, MLS Commissioner Don Garber, commented on the idea of changing the schedule of MLS to a more European or South American Calendar. Some strong quotes from "The Don":

“We’ve got to teach our fans that this is not just something you come out on a nice sunny afternoon or a warm summer night,” says Garber. “It’s a sport that in England and in Germany, they play when its cold. We’ve got to get our fans to support us even when it’s not optimal weather or we’re never going to be able to abide by that international schedule.”

“It’s not an optimum thing,” said Garber, “but it’s something we’re faced with and I think we’re going to have even further challenges in the years ahead.”

Two of those challenges include, the schedule of the new CONCACAF Champions League, which will put MLS teams at a disadvantage during the knockout round in the spring, if the current schedule is followed and potential participation in the Copa Libertadores.

  4. What would it be like during a mid-winter match in Chicago or Toronto, or even Montreal if the MLS expands there? -40 weather and three feet of snow.

    Brillant. Absolutely brilliant.

  8. The more I hear Don Garber speak on issues, the less confident I am in his ability to take this league much farther.

This is the USA, not Europe, and not South America.

There are some things that are unique to the US sporting culture that others don't have. If Garber thinks a MLS schedule, that would go head to head with the NFL and college football for half the year, play in cold weather the middle part of a season, and finish out in the spring might work, then someone needs to have him mentally evaluated.
