We know that Pope Benedict XVI is a fan of the football. We also know that he is in Washington, DC. Well now thanks to Steve Goff at the Washington Post we now know that United manager Tommy Soehn would like the pontiff to visit RFK stadium for their Thursday night match against Columbus which will be shown nationwide on ESPN2. United despite putting up a strong showing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup before finally falling to Mexico's Pachuca CF 3-2 on aggregate in the semi-final has only won one of its three league games so far this season. ![]()
"I hope he comes to the game. We could use it."

There is no way that that The Pope would even give the impression of favoring one team. DC can forget about it.
Who cares who his favorite team is?
I'm no "Big C" Catholic, but I'd love to see a prominent world leader like The German Shepherd at an MLS game.
We need headlines!
All due respect, gang, but Benny 16has bigger things on his plate than our silly little kickball league and the microbrew nerds that at RFK that turn every meaningless pre-game piss-up into an epicurean tour-de-force. All in the name of charity, of course. Forget it.
DC united stayed at home to see the pope, home to see the pope.....
