EXPANSION: It's Official: Seattle Sounders FC

Posted by MLSR Monday, April 7, 2008

As we suspected, the ownership group in Seattle chose to split the difference and go with a combination of Seattle FC and Seattle Sounders, their two highest finishers garnering 82% of the vote.

Here's the website.

MLSR's uncovering the 3 trademarked names
was cited as something which caught the ownership group off guard and they were not expecting the reaction that ensued.

  2. SO STOKED THEY WENT WITH SOUDNERS! However...the crest leaves a little to be desired. Since they're named after a body of water, you'd think they would represent that somehow, rather than the SpaceNeedle (and a cartoon version of the Needle at that!). Oh well. GO SOUNDERS!

  4. That crest is so ugly. What a disappointment after all this time expecting something classy.

  6. What are you talking about... The crest looks great. I can't wait to see the jerseys. To be honest, I never thought that the MLS would back down on the Sounders name, but the fans have spoken...

    Congratulations, Seattle.
Let's see what the Philly choice is...

  8. Congratulations on your naming victory Seattle Fans. I'm sure this will be the high point of your clubs success.

I have to say, I like the crest as well. I am sure the kits will be hideous though, just like every other Seattle sports teams uniforms.

  10. Gay name, gay crest. Oh well, at least I can still wear my cheezy ass 1994 sweatshirt to the matches!

PS. Fuck all you shits that voted for Sounders as the team name.

  12. Way to go Jade. If it wasn't for you uncovering registered url's we would have had Seattle FC. Now we're stuck with another corny american name with an atrocity of a crest.

  14. Personally I like the name and the crest...

One of the big things of soccer is tradition... And Seattle had a tradition with that name... Build on it...

The crest may look a little cartoony but I do like it...

  16. "another corny american name"...?

    Dear Chris,

While I discovered the trademarks other people uncovered the urls and broke this story here. I just passed on what I found out.

That said, if the worst thing I've ever done is something which enabled local people who were promised a say in how their club was run, to mobilize and rally behind the tradition of a storied football club, then so be it. I'm goin to hell anyway.

  20. The name: A

    The Crest: D

IMO, this crest reminds of the 1996 MLS days. What color is that green anyways, "pistachio"? You should not use a color for a sports team that is not available in a kid's basic marker set. Especially a color that is only available at Michael's Arts & Crafts Store!

It looks like the logo for a two-bit Trade Conference.

  22. Sounders is fine with me. It has tradition and the fans wanted the name, so that's all that matters. The crest on the other hand, needs improvement. IMO, ownership wasn't expecting Sounders to be the name so they had to come up with make-shift crest, cause that's what it lookes like. I'm sure they'll update it before '09. And personally, I like the colors, their original and unique. I picture their jerseys looking like Barcelona's but with green instead of red.

  24. The name is a must. The Sounders is a tradition, and what better way to honor that tradition than promoting it to 'the big leagues'. The emblem isn't the greatest, no, but people need to see something they register as 'Seattle', and what better landmark than the Space Needle? They couldn't really put Grunge into an icon....and who the hell wants the emblem to include something related to Boeing, Microsoft, or f-ing coffee???
