Posted by MLSR Sunday, March 16, 2008

According to this report
(read the very bottom), DC United's Luciano Emilio has turned down being naturalized as Honduran. Emilio, a Brazilian national, age, 29 has never played for Brazil.

Luciano descarta nacionalizarse

Luciano rules out naturalization.

The Brazilian footballer Luciano Emilio, who played with success at Real Espana and Club Olimpia, has ruled out the possibility of a naturalized Honduran call up to the (Honduran) National Team, as proposed by the chairman of the National Team Federation.
"At first, Luciano was very optimistic about it, but his spirits fell when he read some things that were said here, (in Honduras)" said Solis. When he (the Chairman) mentioned the nationalization of Brazilian nationals some players objected to him (Emilio) being summoned to the team.

So what would Emilo's options be now?

Some have suggested that Emilio become a naturalized US citizen and play for a US national team which could use another pure striker with a bit of technical flair.

The process of naturalization takes many years. According to the current rules, one seeking naturalization must...."be a permanent resident for not less than five years. (If a person obtained permanent residence through marriage to a U.S. citizen, they may be eligible for naturalization in three years if the couple has been married for 3 years, if the spouse was a citizen during that entire period, and if the couple are still living in marital unity);"

So unless Emilio were to marry a US citizen, he would be 34-35 before he'd be eligible to play for the US.

However if he did marry a US citizen, he would be eligible for a US cap at 31 having lived in the USA a year already.

By comparison Preki was 33 when he was first capped by the United States.
